OUR METHODOLOGY

In adopting the communicative, learner-centred teaching methodology, we undertake to do the following:

1. Provide Appropriate Input

We engage students in reading, comprehending, interpreting and writing the language at the appropriate level that they are expected to learn. In finely tuning the input, we also challenge the students to analyse materials that are more complex than the students' current proficiencies. We stretch the boundaries of their current knowledge. In doing so, we provide scaffolding: easy, step by step methods to practise relevant skills so that they are not overwhelmed by its difficulty. We want to ensure an ascending experience in each lesson, so that the students feel as if they are scaling the peak.

2. Use Authentic Texts

The language used will be authentic, not simplified or sophisticated so that students are exposed to the real world where standard English is used. We make use of varied online media as a rich source of authentic materials.

3. Establish Context

In interacting with the carefully selected resources, students will be provided with the cultural contexts of the authentic materials. They will learn and discuss the relevant social, economic, scientific, cultural and political environments.

4. Use Task-Based Activities

Students will be assigned different task-based activities to improve their skills of communication through description, exposition, argument and presentation, both written & aural.

5. Encourage Collaboration

Beside individual assignments, we encourage students to collaborate in pair & group work. This will provide opportunities for peer learning and highlight to them the importance of collaboration, complementarity of skills and peer communication.

6. Adopt an Integrated Approach

We place emphasis on an integrated approach to language learning. What this means is that we combine the learning of listening, reading, speaking, thinking and writing skills in every session. This is the authentic mode of language acquisition with proven, lasting results that stand students in excellent stead in preparation for writing examinations as well as in life.

7. Address Grammar and Vocabulary Deliberately

Grammar rules will not be taught in isolation & rote learning of Vocabulary lists would not be encouraged. We will discuss the rules of grammar & vocabulary as they arise in each activity and assignment. This is a more effective way to enable students to internalise language rules rather than memorise them, out of context.

8. Facilitate Feedback and Self-Correction with Selected International i-Tutors

We provide direct and immediate feedback and encourage students to self-correct both verbal and written work & students will interact live with carefully selected, highly qualified iTutors.

Methodology Questions

1. What is the key advantage of the communicative language learning approach?

Research has shown that students learn more effectively through this approach as it provides authentic communication tasks for them to practise. The purpose of the English examinations is to assess the extent to which students have been equipped with receptive and productive skills in order to engage with the wider world, outside the home and school.

2. How can the task-based learning ensure that students learn proper grammar and expand their vocabulary?

In  task-based learning, students are motivated to complete the tasks assigned and in the process, they will invariably have to learn to use accurate grammar and appropriate vocabulary. In learning how to compose an email, a message, a speech or an advertisement, the students practise the use of correct tenses, as well the choice of suitable words, and phrases to address the audience. 

3. In what way does the project-based learning motivate students?

In project-based learning, students find themselves in authentic real life situations where they have to contribute to the production and presentation of a particular product, both as individuals, as well as a team member. In doing so, they get the chance to give of their best, and simultaneously learn from other students. It is a win-win situation in the learning environment. In producing a blog, a flyer, an exposition or a refutation, students will learn from both the iTutors and fellow students on the most effective ways to introduce, develop and conclude the different texts. Creativity is encouraged and co-operation is learnt.

4. Can I learn just by listening in and doing the written assignments without participating actively in the tutorials?

Yes, but you will learn much more and a lot faster when you take part. Also, it is tonnes more fun!

5. Can I just participate in tutorials and not submit written assignments?

Yes, but you cannot be sure that you know how to apply all the techniques you learn in the tutorials. It is through completing the written assignments that you have a record of your improvement.
